The truth is, we can impact the health and appearance of our skin simply by watching what we eat. Instead of buying all sorts of cosmetics and creams to enhance the appearance of our skin or to “look younger” we should focus on some basic diet rules. First, avoid all junk food, processed food and fast food. Second, make sure that your healthy diet contains enough essential fatty acids. You can eat more fish and certain fruits, vegetables and nuts that contain omega 3 EFA’s, or you can take a daily supplement. Flax seed, walnuts and cold water fish all have a positive effect on your skin.
Healthy skin cells are well hydrated. A skin cell’s ability to hold water decreases with age. At the cell level, a strong cell membrane will maintain the water and nutrient levels. Fatty acids make up part of the cell membrane so a deficiency of EFA’s results in unstable membranes which lose moisture, which in turn leads to less supple, older-looking skin. There is evidence to suggest that the healthier and more supple your skin cells, the less intense the appearance of cellulite. Proper intake of EFA’s will give your skin cells more fullness and elasticity, reducing the appearance of cellulite.
So, if healthy, younger-looking skin is important to you, start learning about the benefits of essential fatty acids and do more for the long term health of your skin.
